I am participating in Williams-Sonoma Juice Week. This weeks mission is “Juices That Bite Back.” Since the flu season is already among us and people are getting sick left and right, I concocted a Flu Elixir to kick those coughs, colds and runny noses out the door! This Flu Elixir will get you back on your feet in no time! This juice tastes amazing! It has the perfect sweetness with a zing at the end. This Flu Elixir has cabbage, cucumber, spinach, lemon, pineapple, watermelon, ginger root and turmeric root. All these foods are combined to create a synergistic effect on the body to combat the flu.
Cabbage is very high in sulphur which helps stimulate the production of friendly bacteria in the gut, did you know that 70-80% of the immune system is in the gut? The healthier your gut flora, the stronger your immune system. Cucumbers are very hydrating and a good source of potassium. Spinach has a lot of iron and gives you an energy boost. Lemon, pineapple and watermelon are all very high in vitamin C, a water-soluble antioxidant vitamin capable of neutralizing potentially damaging free radicals. Pineapple in particular is excellent for clearing out phlem and mucus due to it’s enzyme bromelain. Alas, the super concentrated immune boosters are ginger root and turmeric root. Ginger root is excellent for reducing mucus in the body, getting rid of that awful tickle in your throat and reducing inflammation.
Turmeric root is something new I have been using in my kitchen. It contains compounds with strong medicinal properties. It not only helps the body fight inflammation but it also contains powerful anti-oxidants that can help fight free radicals I am using a Breville Juice Fountain Multi Speed Juicer to make my juice. This is a high speed centrifugal juicer. I find this the best type of juicer for families and those with limited time. I can make a quart of juice and have my juicer cleaned in 15 minutes or less, now that is using my time wisely! When my friend is ill, I bring her homemade juice and it is the best remedy. Remember the old saying, “There is more joy in giving than receiving?” It’s totally true! Serve this Flu Elixir to your friend or family member and they will not only be forever grateful, but feel completely rejuvenated and energized!

Check out these yummy gluten free recipes:
- 1 cup chopped green cabbage
- 1 cup chopped English cucumber
- 1 cup packed baby spinach
- 1 cup freshly cubed pineapple
- 2 cups cubed seedless watermelon
- 1 inch ginger root
- 1 inch turmeric root
- ½ lemon, ⅔ of skin removed
- Run all ingredients through a juicer in order listed above.
- It is best to drink immediately. Juice will store in a sealed glass container in the fridge for 24 hours.
