My son has been begging me to make homemade gluten free corn-dogs all summer long! Honestly, I don’t even know where he got this idea from, I can’t remember when the last time he has had a gluten free corn-dog, it must have been when he was 3 or 4! Could he remember that far back? I suppose it left a huge impression on his taste buds because for some reason, he really wanted corn dogs!
Furthermore, he is very persistent and when he sets his mind to something, he is determined to get it and never give up! So every day, he asked for corn dogs, until one day, I gave in, did some research and found a great recipe that I “tweeked” to fit my families needs.
This Gluten Free Mini Corn Dog Recipe was inspired by Serious Eats Gluten Free Corn Dog Recipe. The changes I made are to make my batter a bit thicker, dairy free, a bit sweeter, used an all-purpose gluten free flour and opted for mini corn dogs.
Let me show you how EASY it is to make Gluten Free Mini Corn Dogs.
Items needed to Make Gluten Free Mini Corn Dogs:
First of all, gather your ingredients. Whenever possible opt for organic or non-gmo. FYI, all of Bob’s Red Mill products are non-GMO.
- Organic Yellow Cornmeal
- Bobs Red Mill Gluten Free 1 to 1 Flour
- baking powder
- Himalayan salt
- organic honey
- almond milk, homemade is best (any dairy free milk alternative will work)
- 2 large organic eggs
- non GMO avocado oil
- organic or grass-fed Nitrate Free hot dogs
- popsicle sticks
Steps for Making Gluten Free Mini Corn Dogs:
Step one is to make your batter. Whisk together all your dry ingredients and a mixing bowl.
Step two, add your wet ingredients and mix well. Then, add your batter to a large glass or mason jar. It will make it easier to get batter on your hot dog this way.
Step three, cut your hot dogs in half and stick a popsicle stick through them. I had my son do this. He really enjoys helping in the kitchen. He pretty much grew up in the kitchen, you can see some pictures of him making green smoothie here.
Step four, get your hot oil ready in a pan. I set my flame to medium heat.
Step 5, get your station ready near the stove. I had my pan ready with hot oil. My hot dogs in a container nearby so I don’t drip batter all over the place. My batter near the pan, tongs and a rack covered in brown paper bags for draining. Sorry this picture below has such awful lighting but I know it would be helpful to some of you visual learners to see the set-up!
The last and final step is to dip the hot dog in the batter and place it gently in the oil. I used the tongs for this because I did not want my fingers any where near that hot oil and neither do you! So be sure to use tongs with a good grip!
I fried my hot dogs for about 2 minutes per side or until golden brown. Then move onto the brown paper bags to drain for a minute and then give them to your hungry kiddos!
These gluten free mini corn dogs are really easy to make. You can have your kids do everything EXCEPT the frying!
I tried making these with less batter like the traditional corn dogs but everyone including my neighbors said they were perfect just as they are. The truth is, having a wee bit more of the crunchy crispy batter makes these even better!
Most of all, the batter was so wonderful that we made fried shrimp with it, that recipe will be coming to the blog soon! I called them “Corn-Dog Shrimp”, my husband thought it was a ghastly name for a recipe but my kids loved it!
I know these Gluten Free Mini Corn Dogs will bring a burst of delight to your taste buds! They are easy, gluten free, dairy free and healthier than the traditional version! Enjoy!
