This post is part 2 of my Kick Ass Immunity Series, be sure to check out my Kick Ass Goodbye Fatigue Smoothie. Over the next several weeks, I will be sharing the most powerful natural remedies and recipes I have discovered and personally used over the past 30 years for resolving common health ailments. Today, we will go over the amazing health benefits of this Ginger Wellness Tea, it is my favorite tonic when dealing with sore throats, colds, coughs and a well needed immune boost.
Ginger’s Powerful Gut & Immune Healing Benefits
Ginger is often praised for its ability to ease nausea and reduce bloating, but its benefits don’t stop there. This aromatic root contains compounds like gingerols and shogaols, which have powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties (National Institutes of Health, 2020). According to research, ginger has been shown to improve digestion by speeding up the process of stomach emptying, reducing indigestion, and alleviating discomfort caused by gas and bloating (World Journal of Gastroenterology, 2011).
Beyond gut health, ginger has been linked to improved immune function, thanks to its antimicrobial, anti-allergic and anti-inflammatory effects. I was impressed when I discovered that it has been clinically proven to work as a natural pain relief in osteoarthritis patients. Ginger’s effect is similar to that of NSAIDS, relieving pain and inflammation, but NOT damaging gut mucosa. (Molecules, 2022). So, sipping ginger tea can help the body’s defenses while also providing relief from digestive discomfort and possibly reduce pain. (Molecules, 2022)
The last two times my son had a sore throat, I gave him this Ginger Wellness Tea and to our surprise, the sore throat was gone the next day. Could it be coincidence or could it be the health benefits of ginger and honey?
Garlic: A Natural Immunity Booster
Significantly, garlic is another powerhouse herb with a wealth of health benefits. It’s been used for centuries as a natural remedy for everything from colds to digestive issues. The key active compound in garlic, allicin, has strong antimicrobial and antiviral properties that can help ward off infections and support immune health (Frontiers in Nutrition, 2023).
Garlic also plays a role in promoting healthy digestion. It encourages the production of digestive enzymes and can help regulate the gut microbiome by supporting the growth of beneficial bacteria (Gut Microbes, 2014).
Additionally, garlic possesses significant antiviral activity and can be used prophylactically in the prevention of viral infections. (PubMed, 2020)
Including garlic in your ginger wellness tea is a great way to tap into these benefits while also enjoying a flavorful, aromatic brew.
Raw Honey: A Sweet, Healing Touch
When it comes to sweetening your ginger wellness tea, raw honey is my preferred choice. Raw honey is rich in antioxidants and has natural antibacterial properties that can soothe a sore throat, ease inflammation, and promote healing. (Pharmocognosy Research, 2009). Studies have shown that raw honey can also support digestive health by promoting the growth of beneficial gut bacteria by serving as a prebiotic. Raw honey feeds our good bugs, making it gut friendly. (Frontiers In Nutrition, 2022) Be sure to allow your tea to cool slightly as to preserve the health benefits of the raw honey. (Bee-health, 2019). Additionally, Manuka honey is an excellent choice in this wellness tea. Research says that Manuka “honey is a natural and safe antibiotic.” (AIMS Microbiology, 2018)
Lemon: A Zesty Health Boost
Finally, we add lemon into the mix. This citrus fruit not only enhances the flavor of your tea but also brings a variety of health benefits. Lemon is packed with vitamin C, contains immune-boosting properties and assists in fighting off infections. Vitamin C helps to strengthen your immune system, reduce the severity of colds, and support overall health (National Institutes of Health, 2021).
How to Make a Kick Ass Ginger Wellness Tea
- Scrub a small hand of ginger with a vegetable brush under warm water. It is NOT necessary to peel the ginger root.
- Chop ginger root into 1”pieces.
- Peel 3 cloves of garlic.
- Add chopped ginger and peeled garlic cloves to a small saucepan. Add 4 cups of water and simmer at medium heat for 5-15 minutes. The longer you cook the tea, the more spicy it will be. You can taste after 5 minutes until the desired spice level is reached. To make a more mild, less spicy tea, simmer only 5 minutes, to make a stronger more robust tea, simmer 10-15 minutes.
- Strain tea into 2 mugs for a more concentrated tea or 4 mugs topped off with warm water for a more diluted tea.
- Allow tea to cool to drinking tolerance and add raw honey. Feel free to use Manuka Honey to increase health benefits. You can also add a small ice cube to tea to cool it faster so you can add the raw honey.
- Reserve the ginger garlic mixture in a small jar in the fridge. You can re-use ingredients for a second batch of tea.
